More Detergent Does Not Always Mean More Cleaning
It is easy to assume that adding more detergent will make clothes cleaner. When a shirt has a greasy mark or a towel smells less fresh than expected, an extra scoop can seem like a sensible solution. The logic feels simple: more cleaning agent should mean more cleaning power.
In everyday laundry, however, the relationship is not that straightforward.
Detergent works by helping water interact with dirt, oils, and particles that do not easily mix with water on their own. Surfactants help loosen oily material from fabric and keep small particles suspended in the wash water. Some cleaning products also contain enzymes that act on particular types of residue.
These processes need the right conditions to work properly.

Why Clothes Can Feel Stiff After Too Much Detergent

If one part is increased without considering the others, the overall result may not improve.
More detergent can therefore be counterproductive because cleaning has a practical limit. Once the available washing and rinsing conditions are already being used effectively, extra product may contribute more to residue than to soil removal.
What Should a Good Laundry Routine Aim For
A useful laundry routine does not need to produce excessive foam or leave a strong detergent smell.
Instead, clothing should come out with the soil removed as far as the washing conditions allow, without an unnecessary layer of cleaning product remaining on the fabric.
The fabric should still feel natural for its structure.
If towels repeatedly become coated or stiff, if clothing feels unusually slippery or firm, or if surfaces appear dull after repeated washing, detergent residue may be worth considering as one possible cause.
The solution is not automatically to change everything.
It is more useful to look at the complete system: detergent amount, load size, water movement, fabric thickness, soil level, and rinsing.
Why Less Can Sometimes Clean Better
Detergent is an important part of laundering, but it is only one part.
Cleaning depends on the interaction between water, surfactants, mechanical movement, time, fabric structure, soil type, and rinsing.
Using too little detergent can leave soil behind. Using too much can leave cleaning product behind.
The useful range sits between these two problems.
That is why a larger amount of detergent should not automatically be treated as a stronger cleaning method. The goal is not to fill the wash with more cleaning ingredients. The goal is to give those ingredients the right conditions to loosen unwanted material and then allow water to carry both soil and remaining detergent away.
Once that balance is considered, the reason becomes clear: more detergent can sometimes make clothes less clean because the extra product has to be removed too.
